Choosing a filter press

What is the difference between a chamber, membrane and plate-and-frame filter press?

A chamber press uses recessed plates and relies on feed pressure alone, giving 25–45 % cake moisture at the lowest cost. A membrane press adds an inflatable diaphragm that squeezes the cake to 15–30 % moisture in a shorter cycle. A plate-and-frame press uses alternating plates and frames, is easiest to wash and unload, and suits food, oil and fine chemical clarification.

Which filter press is best for mining tailings dewatering?

For tailings and concentrate, a membrane filter press is usually the right choice: it reaches 15–25 % cake moisture so the cake can be dry-stacked or trucked, and the shorter cycle means fewer plates for the same tonnage. A chamber press works when moisture of 30 % or more is acceptable and capital cost matters most.

Which filter press is best for sludge dewatering in a wastewater plant?

Municipal and industrial sludge is normally handled by a fully automatic chamber or membrane filter press with PLC control, automatic plate shifting and cloth washing. Chamber presses reach 60–75 % solids; membrane presses reach 70–85 % solids and cut disposal cost.

How do I calculate what size filter press I need?

Start from dry solids per day, slurry concentration and target cycles per day. Cake volume per cycle = daily dry solids ÷ cycles ÷ cake density ÷ (1 − cake moisture). Divide by chamber volume per plate to get plate count, then check filtration area against filtration rate. Send us a slurry sample or lab data and we return a sizing sheet within 24 hours.

Can a filter press be customised for my slurry?

Yes. Plate size, plate count, chamber depth, membrane or recessed plates, cloth material and micron rating, feed pump type, drip trays, cake conveyors and full PLC automation are all specified per project.

Do you provide lab testing before I buy?

Yes. We run bench filter press tests on your sample to measure filtration rate, cake moisture and cloth blinding. The report is used to size the industrial press and choose the cloth.

How much does an industrial filter press cost?

In 2026 a Chinese-made chamber filter press typically runs from about USD 8,000 for a small 630 mm unit to USD 60,000–150,000 for a 1500–2000 mm fully automatic membrane press. Price is driven by plate size, plate count, membrane vs chamber, automation level and material of construction.

What affects the price of a filter press the most?

Three things: filtration area (plate size × plate count), membrane vs chamber plates, and automation (manual, semi-automatic or PLC with auto plate shifter and cloth wash). Stainless or special cloth adds a smaller premium.

What is the delivery time?

Standard chamber and membrane presses ship in 25–45 days after deposit; large or fully automatic units take 45–60 days. Sea freight from Shanghai is roughly 7–15 days to Southeast Asia, 15–25 days to India and the Middle East, 25–40 days to Africa and Latin America.

Do you quote FOB, CIF or DDP?

We quote EXW, FOB Shanghai or CIF to your port. DDP is possible for some countries through our freight partners. Tell us your port and we include freight and insurance in the quotation.

What payment terms do you accept?

Standard terms are 30 % T/T deposit and 70 % before shipment. Irrevocable L/C at sight is accepted for larger orders.

Technical performance

What cake moisture can a membrane filter press reach?

Typically 15–30 % depending on particle size and slurry chemistry. Fine mineral concentrates reach 12–18 %; municipal sludge reaches 25–30 % solids-equivalent.

How long is one filter press cycle?

A chamber press cycle is usually 45–120 minutes; a membrane press cycle is 20–60 minutes because squeezing replaces the slow end of filtration. Cycle time depends on slurry concentration, cloth permeability and feed pump curve.

How much power does a filter press use?

The press itself only uses the hydraulic power pack (typically 2.2–7.5 kW) during closing and plate shifting. The feed pump is the main consumer, 5–45 kW depending on size. Energy per tonne of dry solids is generally 3–10 kWh.

Which feed pump should I use for a filter press?

Air-operated diaphragm (AODD) pumps for small presses and abrasive slurry; slurry pumps with VFD for mining; progressing cavity screw pumps for sludge; ceramic plunger pumps for high-pressure membrane presses.

What filter cloth material should I choose?

Polypropylene (PP) is the default for most mineral and chemical slurries. Polyester (PET) for higher temperature, polyamide (nylon) for abrasion, PTFE-coated for sticky cakes. Micron rating is chosen from lab tests; 5–100 µm covers most applications.

Installation and service

Do you send engineers for installation and commissioning?

Yes. For automatic presses we send an engineer for installation, commissioning and operator training; travel costs are quoted separately. For manual and semi-automatic units most customers install with our video guide and remote support over WhatsApp.

What is the warranty?

The frame, hydraulic system and plates are covered for 12 months from commissioning (18 months from shipment). Filter cloth is a consumable and is not covered.

Spare parts and consumables

How often does filter cloth need to be replaced?

Typically every 1,500–3,000 cycles, or 3–12 months, depending on slurry abrasiveness and washing practice. Sudden loss of filtrate clarity or cake sticking usually means it is time to change cloth.

How long do filter plates last?

Reinforced PP plates last 5–10 years in normal service. Membrane plates last 3–5 years; the membrane itself may be replaced separately.

Do you supply spare parts for other brands of filter press?

Yes. We manufacture filter cloth and PP plates to drawings or samples for most European, Indian and Chinese presses. Send the plate size, thickness and feed hole position.

Can I order filter cloth without buying a press?

Yes. Custom filter cloth for filter presses, belt presses and centrifuges is a core product. Minimum order is one set for a press.

Export and documentation

What certificates come with the machine?

CE certificate, ISO 9001 factory certificate, material test reports for plates and cloth, hydraulic test report, packing list and commercial invoice. Certificate of origin and other customs documents are provided on request.

How is a filter press packed for sea shipment?

Presses up to 1250 mm ship assembled in a 20 ft or 40 ft container on a steel skid with plastic wrap. Larger presses ship as frame plus boxed plates. All packing is fumigation-free plywood or steel.

Which countries do you export to?

What size filter press do I need for 10 m³/h of sludge at 3% solids?

10 m³/h at 3% solids is about 0.3 t of dry solids per hour, or 7.2 t/day over 24 hours. At a cake density of 1.3 t/m³ and 45% moisture that is roughly 10 m³ of cake per day, which fits a 1250 mm chamber press with 60–80 plates running 4–6 cycles. Membrane filter press vs chamber filter press: which gives drier cake?

How do I choose a reliable filter press manufacturer in China?

How can I reduce filter cake moisture below 30%?

Below 30% moisture normally requires membrane squeeze at 1.5–2.0 MPa, an air blow-through step of 5–15 minutes and a monofilament cloth matched to the particle size. On mineral concentrates this reaches 12–20%; on municipal sludge 30% is the practical floor. The cake moisture guide lists each lever with its expected gain.

How do I size a filter press for a municipal wastewater plant?

Municipal sludge is about 60–80 g of dry solids per person per day. A town of 100,000 people produces 6–8 t DS/day, which is typically handled by two 1250–1500 mm presses with 80–120 plates each, running 3–4 cycles per day. See sizing by population.

Why does my filter press cycle take 4 hours and how can I shorten it?

Long cycles usually come from low feed pressure, blinded cloth, thin slurry below 2% solids or an undersized feed pump. Raising feed pressure in stages to 0.8–1.0 MPa, pre-thickening to 4–6% and washing cloth every 20–30 cycles typically brings a 4-hour cycle down to 1.5–2.5 hours. Which feed pump should I use for a filter press?

Air-operated diaphragm pumps suit presses up to about 1000 mm and 0.7 MPa; progressing cavity pumps handle abrasive or fibrous sludge with steady flow; ceramic piston pumps deliver 1.6 MPa or more for high-pressure presses. My filter press cloth keeps tearing — what material and micron rating should I use?

Tearing is usually caused by abrasive particles on a multifilament cloth or by plates closing on folded cloth. Switch to monofilament PP for abrasive slurries, choose 25–75 µm for mineral fines and 100–200 µm for flocculated sludge, and check plate alignment. Cloth life should be 3–12 months. Is an automatic filter press worth it for a small plant?

Automation pays back when the press runs more than 4 cycles per day or labor costs exceed about USD 1,500 per month. Auto plate shifting and cloth washing cut operator time from 40–60 minutes per cycle to under 10 and typically return the extra investment in 12–30 months. Use the ROI calculation.

What plate material is needed for electroplating sludge?

Electroplating sludge is acidic and contains heavy metals, so reinforced polypropylene plates with PP or PA cloth are standard; glass-reinforced PP is used above 90 °C. Plants of 500–3000 m³/day usually need 800–1250 mm presses. See electroplating filter press sizing.

Filter press vs decanter centrifuge for tailings: which costs less per ton?

A membrane filter press dewaters tailings to 12–20% moisture at 3–6 kWh per ton of dry solids, while a decanter reaches 25–35% at 8–15 kWh/t and needs more polymer. Do I need a stainless steel filter press for food or pharmaceutical use?

A recessed (chamber) plate forms the chamber in the plate itself, allowing 0.6–1.6 MPa feed pressure and automatic operation; plate-and-frame presses use flat plates with separate frames, run at lower pressure and are mostly chosen for polishing or small batches. Why does my filter press hydraulic system lose pressure?

Pressure loss usually comes from a worn cylinder seal, a leaking check valve, contaminated oil or a relief valve set below the 20–25 MPa closing pressure. Most faults are fixed with a seal kit and an oil change. See the 10 hydraulic fixes.

How do I calculate the number of filter press plates I need?

Divide the daily cake volume (dry solids ÷ cake solids fraction ÷ cake density of 1.2–1.6 t/m³) by the cycles per day, then by the chamber volume per plate, and add a 1.2–1.3 safety factor. A 40 t DS/day plant needs about 150 plates of 1500 mm. Worked example in calculating plate count.

Filter press vs screw press for sludge dewatering: which is cheaper to run?

Can a filter press handle oily sludge and drilling mud?

Should I rent or buy a filter press for a 6-month project?
