Filter Presses for Electroplating and Metal Finishing Sludge
Quick answer: Electroplating wastewater produces metal hydroxide sludge — low in solids, gelatinous, chemically aggressive and usually classified as hazardous waste. Because disposal is charged by weight, every percent of water you leave in the cake is money you pay to transport. That economics, not throughput, is what justifies the press.
Why this sludge is difficult
Hydroxide precipitates form loose, water-bound flocs. Compared with a mineral slurry of the same dry-solids mass they occupy far more volume, drain slowly and compress rather than filter cleanly.
- Very low feed solids. Often well under a few percent after settling, so the press spends most of the cycle moving water.
- Mixed metals. Chromium, nickel, copper, zinc and cyanide streams each precipitate under different conditions; combined treatment gives a sludge whose behaviour drifts with the production schedule.
- Chemistry attacks the machine. Acid and alkali swings, chromates and chlorides limit which cloth polymers and plate materials are usable.
- Hazardous classification. Cake is usually a regulated waste, so moisture content directly sets your disposal invoice.
The moisture target sets the machine
In most industries cake dryness is a convenience. Here it is the business case. Because hazardous waste is priced per tonne, reducing cake moisture reduces tonnage shipped, and membrane (diaphragm) plates usually pay for themselves faster in this application than in any other.

Chemistry decides cloth and plate material
Polypropylene handles most plating chemistry well and is the usual starting point; polyester is a poor choice where strong alkali is present. Where temperature and oxidising conditions are severe, the cloth polymer, not the weave, becomes the limiting factor.

Get the pre-treatment right first
Plating shops that struggle with dewatering usually have a precipitation problem, not a press problem. Incomplete pH adjustment, poor coagulant selection or insufficient settling time all arrive at the press as sludge that will not dewater. Fixing conditioning is cheaper than upsizing.

Why is my hydroxide cake so wet?
Because hydroxide flocs bind water physically. Longer cycles help only up to a point; the real levers are better precipitation chemistry, adequate settling or thickening before the press, and membrane squeeze.
Are membrane plates worth it for plating sludge?
More often than in other industries, yes — because your disposal cost is per tonne and the cake is hazardous. The payback calculation is simple once you know your current cake moisture and your disposal rate per tonne.
Can I treat cyanide and chrome streams together?
Not before they are separately destroyed or reduced. Combining untreated streams creates both a safety hazard and a sludge that dewaters unpredictably. Segregate, treat, then combine for precipitation.
What cloth should I start with?
Polypropylene in a weave chosen for fine, compressible solids is the usual starting point, but the correct answer depends on your actual chemistry and temperature. This is exactly what a filtration test on your sludge settles.
