Filter Presses for Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Sludge

Quick answer: Wastewater sludge is the hardest common feed for a filter press, because it is biological, compressible and low in solids. Everything upstream — thickening, conditioning, which treatment process produced the sludge — matters more to your cake dryness than the press model does.

What kind of sludge are you actually dewatering?

“Sludge” covers materials that behave nothing alike:

  • Primary sludge — settled solids, relatively easy, dewaters well.
  • Waste activated sludge (WAS) — biological flocs, highly compressible, holds water stubbornly, always needs conditioning.
  • Chemical sludge — hydroxide or carbonate precipitates from coagulation, gelatinous and volume-heavy.
  • Mixed sludge — what most plants actually have, with the ratio drifting over the year.

A press sized on primary sludge and fed WAS will disappoint. This is the most common sizing mistake we see.

Thicken before you filter

Feeding a press at one or two percent solids means it spends most of the cycle pumping water. Thickening to a higher feed solids concentration shortens cycles and raises throughput on the same machine — almost always cheaper than buying a larger press. Where footprint or continuous duty rules, a multi-disc screw press can do the job instead.

Conditioning is not optional

Polymer and, for some sludges, lime or ferric conditioning change floc structure so water can leave. Under-dosing gives long cycles and wet cake; over-dosing wastes chemical and can blind cloth. This is a dosing problem that jar tests solve, not a machine problem.

Upstream treatment changes the dewatering job

  • COD reduction — biological routes generate WAS; chemical routes generate hydroxide sludge. Different dewatering entirely.
  • Ammonia nitrogen removal — nitrification and denitrification add sludge age effects that alter dewaterability.
  • Dissolved air flotation — DAF float is light, greasy and behaves very differently from settled sludge.

Sizing

Sizing starts from daily dry solids load, not from flow. A plant serving a given population equivalent produces a fairly predictable dry-solids mass; from that, a target cake solids and an achievable cycle count give chamber volume. Why is my cake still wet after a full cycle?

In order of likelihood: conditioning is wrong, feed solids are too low, the cycle is being cut short, or the cloth is blinded. A bigger press fixes none of these.

Filter press or screw press for municipal sludge?

A filter press gives drier cake in batches and suits plants where disposal is charged by weight. A screw press runs continuously and unattended with lower power and noise, and suits smaller or remote plants.

Do I need to thicken before the press?

If your feed is only a few percent solids, thickening usually pays for itself in cycle time. The exact break-even depends on your sludge, which a filtration test answers directly.

How long does filter cloth last on sludge duty?
