How Often Should Filter Press Cloth Be Replaced?

Why the calendar is the wrong trigger

Cloth life depends on abrasion, chemistry, temperature, pressure and how often the cloth is washed — not on elapsed months. The same cloth specification can last three months on abrasive mineral concentrate and a year on municipal sludge. Replacing on a fixed schedule either throws away serviceable cloth or runs failing cloth long past the point where it is costing you money in longer cycles and wetter cake.

Performance-based replacement is straightforward once you know which signal moves first.

Signal 1 is the one worth building a habit around. By the time signals 3 and 4 appear you have usually been losing throughput for weeks.

Wash first, then decide

Falling performance does not always mean worn-out cloth. Before replacing, wash it and see whether performance returns:

  • Acid wash for scale, typically from hard water or lime dosing
  • Alkaline or solvent wash for oil, grease and organic fouling
  • High-pressure water for embedded solids on monofilament weaves

If washing restores cycle time, the cloth was fouled, not worn, and the real question becomes why it fouled so fast. If washing makes little difference, the weave is blinded or abraded and replacement is due.

What shortens cloth life

  1. Too fine a weave for the slurry. The finest weave gives the clearest filtrate and blinds soonest. If cloth life is short and filtrate is very clear, you may be over-specified — see how fibre, weave and permeability are chosen.
  2. Abrasive solids on the wrong fibre. Polyamide resists abrasion best; polypropylene is the cheapest and most chemically versatile but wears faster under abrasive duty.
  3. Running above the temperature rating. PP is rated to about 90 °C, PET to about 150 °C, PA to about 120 °C. Exceeding the rating degrades the fibre permanently.
  4. Chemistry mismatch. PET hydrolyses in strong alkali; PA is attacked by strong acid. A cloth that dissolves slowly will look like premature wear.
  5. Poor conditioning upstream. Badly flocculated fines drive straight into the weave. Fixing the polymer dose often extends cloth life more than changing the cloth.
  6. Leaving cake on the cloth between cycles. Residue dries, hardens and abrades on the next close.

Plan spares before you need them

An unplanned cloth failure stops the press, and a stopped press backs sludge up into the treatment plant — which is how a consumable problem becomes an effluent problem. Keep at least one complete spare set on the shelf, and change the whole set rather than individual cloths: mixed-age cloths give uneven cake and make leak diagnosis harder.

When ordering, the plate is what matters, not the press brand. Send plate size, plate type, feed arrangement (centre or corner), neck or hole dimensions, and a photograph of an existing cloth laid flat with a tape measure in frame.
